Flood Water Rescue

Police

Two people are lucky to be alive after being washed from a flooded bridge about two o’clock this morning.

The male and female became stranded after their vehicle aquaplaned and stalled while attempting to cross the flooded Edith River Bridge on the Stuart Highway north of Katherine.

The couple was swept from the roof of their vehicle.

They were able to grab hold of a tree about 50m down stream and waited until help arrived.

“Police and NTES Volunteers from Katherine successfully rescued the couple a short time later and they were conveyed to the Katherine District Hospital for a medical check-up.” Said Commander David Proctor.

“In a separate incident, a car towing a caravan was also washed from the Cullen River Bridge. Both occupants escaped safely.”

“Several other motorists are stranded between Katherine and Pine Creek with the Stuart Highway cut by rising flood waters at Edith Falls River and the Cullen River. “

“All those people are safe and on dry land. “

“Police continue to urge people not to take risks with floodwaters.” Said Commander Proctor.
