Easter traffic –Alice Springs

Police

More than 1200 drivers were breath-tested in Alice Springs during the Easter traffic campaign.

Sergeant Conan Robertson said eight drink drivers were detected during the campaign. Among the highest readings was that of a 32-year-old man who was arrested after he was caught driving at the Imanpa Community with a blood alcohol level of .210 per cent. Police charged him with high range drink driving, unlicensed driving and driving an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle.

A 50-year-old man will also face court after police found he was driving with a blood alcohol level of .200 per cent on Stott Terrace on Monday. He has been charged with high range drink driving and driving unlicensed.

Sergeant Robertson said police had also detected two drivers exceeding the speed limit on Lasseter Highway this week.

"A 20-year-old man was driving a Holden Commodore at 160 kilometres per hour in a 110 zone. That's 50 kilometres over the speed limit and he'll now have to pay a $520 fine and lose six demerit points," Sgt Robertson said.

"Also on the Lasseter Highway a 40-year-old man was found to be driving his Toyota Landcruiser at 140 kilometres per hour. He was also issued with a Traffic Infringement Notice and will now have to pay a $220 fine and lose three demerit points."

Sergeant Robertson said one of the more alarming offences detected was that of a 21-year-old man who was caught at a service station in Alice Springs driving an unroadworthy 24-seater coaster bus.

"What is amazing about this offender is the bus was defected two days before and still had the defect notice on the window. Not only did it have four bald tyres, but it had numerous other faults including cracked pillars supporting the windscreen. And this driver was preparing to take his 22 passengers back to Kintore in this vehicle. The outcome could have been carnage."
