Daly River Community - Update 2

Police

The latest advice from the Bureau of Meteorology for the Daly River Region states that the flood warning has been downgraded to a ‘Minor’ from a ‘Moderate’ level and that the peak is not expected to reach Daly River until early next week.

The level at the Daly River Crossing is still predicated to be at 13.1 metres.

However, NT Police Superintendent Danny Bacon said this down grading of the warning does not mean complacency and the community remain on alert.

“The Daly River/ Nauiyu Community continues to stand ready to activate an evacuation plan if required as the Bureau of Meteorology warnings and river levels continue to be closely monitored.

“At this time the local Counter Disaster Committee at Daly River remains at ‘Alert (Watch)’ stage and will hold their next meeting on Monday 2 January 2012.

“Again, drivers are reminded to carefully consider their options before trying to cross any flooded roadways. Trying to predict the water depth or not being able to see if the road is still intact could have fatal consequences.

“It is important the public remain vigilant regarding croc awareness. While there are always crocs in the Daly River, it will become more difficult to tell the depth or speed of the water which could also be carrying submerged objects such as logs.

“Parents were reminded this morning to talk to their children about water safety, especially about the risks of swimming in swollen rivers and drains.” Superintendent Bacon concluded.

Further updates and advice will be provided in accordance with ongoing monitoring and planning.
