Child abuse charges - Alice Springs

Three people have been arrested in relation to allegations of child abuse which occurred at an outstation south of Alice Springs.

Detective Acting Superintendent  Travis Wurst said Police and Department of Children and Families staff travelled to the outstation on Tuesday after a 16-year-old boy ran away from the community and came to police notice in Alice Springs.

“The boy alleged he and others at the outstation had been maltreated by staff so we sent a team of investigators to the community,” Det A/Supt Wurst said.

“We removed six teenagers from the facility and another from a nearby community. They have been brought to Alice Springs and placed in the care and of the Department of Children and Families. Two adults were also removed from the outstation and were provided with emergency accommodation.

“Three staff members of the outstation have now been arrested and two have been charged.

“A 67-year-old man has been charged with three counts of deprivation of liberty and three of aggravated assault.

“A 24-year-old man has been charged with nine counts of deprivation of liberty,  two of aggravated assault and two of failing to provide the necessaries of life.

“A 37-year-old woman is in custody and is yet to be interviewed. All are expected to receive conditional bail to appear in court at a later date.”
