Arrest for stolen vehicle - Katherine

Police

Katherine Police arrested a 19-year-old male early yesterday morning after finding him sitting in a stolen vehicle that was located on Second Street.

Superintendent Brent Warren from the Katherine Division said that members witnessed the male, stopped with a Suzuki hatchback, opposite Bucking Bull Burger Bar at around 5:40 am.

“He stated that the car had overheated however after speaking to the man, it was soon established that he was not only intoxicated, but also not the owner of the vehicle,” said Superintendent Warren.

“Police identified the real owner of the vehicle and made contact with them, confirming that it had been stolen during an unlawful entry at a house in Katherine the previous night.

“The 19-year-old male was interviewed and has since been charged with unlawful entry, criminal damage and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.  He has been bailed to appear in the Katherine Court on 5 December.

“The male home owner in this case was unaware that his vehicle had been stolen until he was contacted by Police.

“I again urge everyone to lock their homes and to secure personal items such as wallets, bags, keys and mobile phones. Always keep items of value out of sight whether in your vehicle or within your house.”
