Police

Police from Tennant Creek have been assisting Ali Curung Officers crack down on drivers who flaunt road rules and who use vehicles that are unsafe.

Operation Carlton is the second such undertaking by local Police in response to the triple fatality that occurred in the area in November.

Remote Sergeant Trevor Bates said the education of drivers needs to be a priority or there will be more avoidable deaths on the remote roads.

“Drink driving, the wearing of seatbelts, unlicensed drivers, unregistered and unroadworthy vehicles are our main targets but it is also about road safety and the consequences when you get it wrong.”

Police set up RBT stations adjacent to the Ali Curung access road and had mobile units patrolling the Stuart Highway as the operation got underway.

68 drivers were tested with three disappointingly returning medium and high range results with readings of 0.119%, 0.131% and 0.191%.

Three drivers were unlicensed, one car was deemed defective and another was being driven with a previous defect notice still attached.

Three drivers were cautioned that their cars needed work or they would be issued a defect notice.

Two drivers were cautioned for speeding.

Remote Sergeant Bates said the operation is ongoing and Police would be doing all they could in the hope of avoiding another tragic loss of life in the region
