Aggravated assault and criminal damage - Darwin

Detectives from the General Crime section have charged a 20-year-old man who assaulted a 70-year-old female and damaged property in Girraween last night.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant of the General Crime Section, Chris Board said Police, Fire and Rescue and St John Ambulance were called to the disturbance at about 5:00 pm.

“It appears the man has taken his girlfriends car and crashed it into a tree, the car and tree have then caught on fire.

“The man also smashed a substantial amount of property in the house he shared with his girlfriend and trashed her parents place situated on the same property.

“It is alleged the man then ran to neighbouring residence and assaulted a 70-year-old female by hitting her with table legs, before punching and kicking her several times, causing her to fall to the ground.

“The female was taken to the Palmerston Clinic for treatment.

“The man was arrested by Police at the scene and remained in custody overnight.

“He has since been charged with aggravated assault and criminal damage this afternoon,” Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Board said.
