A six-year-old boy is in the Intensive Care Unit of Royal Darwin Hospital after an accident on a station south of Darwin last night.

Police say the boy was run over by a fire truck on Tipperary Station just after 8.30pm while it was being manoeuvred into position should it be needed to put out fires caused by exploding fireworks.

Duty Superintendent Bob Rennie said the vehicle had been moving slowly forward when the accident occurred.

"The boy was medivaced to RDH where he remains in a stable condition with non-life threatening injuries," he said.

Local police and medical staff from the Adelaide River clinic attended the scene and arranged for him to be taken to Darwin for treatment.
