Drink drivers overnight

Police

A 30-year-old man was charged in relation to drink driving offences yesterday after a member of the public reported his erratic driving to local police.

The man is alleged to have been driving on Wishart Road toward Palmerston CBD at about 4:10 pm when he was first witnessed swerving to the wrong side of the road. The man is alleged to have then travelled along numerous streets in Palmerston hitting curbs and narrowly missing other cars.

A member of the public immediately alerted police to the offenders dangerous driving and followed him to a residence on Mannikan Road in Bakewell. A short time later police arrived and arrested him and conveyed to Darwin Watch House for breath analysis. He provided a high range blood alcohol content reading of .225%.

He has since been charged with high range drink driving offences and is due to appear in Darwin Magistrates Court at a later date.

Duty Superintendent Daniel Shean said this mans actions were completely irresponsible and could have had serious consequences.

"This offender drove through school zones, he could have potentially serious injured or killed a child."

"NT Police commend the members of the public who called police; their actions may have prevented, at the very least a crash or worst case scenario a fatality."

Another two men were arrested last early this morning in relation to drink driving offences in the Darwin area.

A 36 year-old man was pulled over on Wishart Road in Tipperary Waters at about 4.30 am and provided a positive blood alcohol content reading of 0.160%; he was also unlicensed. This is his second offence in three weeks, the previous time he recorded a reading of 0.134%. He is due to appear at Darwin Magistrates Court today in relation to both incidents.

The other man aged 32-years-old was apprehended in Northlakes at about 5.00 am before providing a positive blood alcohol content reading of .102%. He was arrested and is due to appear in court today in relation to this mornings drink driving matter and a prior drink driving offence.

"NT Police would like to remind people that, no matter what time of the day or night, police presence on Northern Territory roads are 24 hrs a day and if you drink and drive, you will get caught."
