Police have charged a 43-year-old man in relation to a stolen motor vehicle in Leanyer today.

Police were conducting patrols just after midnight when they observed a Subaru station wagon parked in a bush area next to the Leanyer Recreation Park.

When Police approached the vehicle the offender tried to escape by driving down a dirt track but was stopped shortly after when he hit a dirt mound.

The man has been charged with:

Unlawful use of a motor vehicle
Drive a motor vehicle unlicensed
Drive without due care
Possess schedule two drug - not trafficable
Possess/carry/use control weapon

The man will face Darwin Magistrates Court this afternoon.
