A 29-year-old man has been charged in relation to a number of assaults which occurred yesterday.

Police received a report just after 2.30am of a disturbance at a residence in Woods Street. Police allege that during the disturbance the man punched his 31-year-old estranged wife numerous times to the face and stabbed another woman, aged 34, to the chest.

The two victims were taken to the Royal Darwin Hospital for treatment to their injuries and later released.

Police said it appeared the argument started when the man allegedly punched his estranged wife at a nightclub earlier in the evening. He then returned home and assaulted the pair when they returned to the Woods Street residence in the early hours of this morning.

The man was arrested has been charged with:

Aggravated assault X 3
Attempt murder
Recklessly endangering life
Recklessly endangering serious harm
Unlawfully cause serious harm.

He has been bailed to appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court on August 11.
