Since Sunday evening, police have attended multiple disturbances involving large groups armed with weapons, including axes, steel bars and crossbows. These incidents have required the deployment of chemical munitions to disperse groups and restore public order. Investigations remain ongoing, with a number of persons identified and further enquiries continuing.
Police are also investigating an incident in which a male was allegedly struck by an arrow believed to have been discharged from a crossbow. This is the second reported crossbow-related injury in the community within a 24-hour period.
Additional police resources are being deployed to Wadeye to support local members, maintain public order and assist with ongoing investigations. Police will continue to maintain a visible presence throughout the community.
Police are urging community members to avoid areas where disturbances are occurring and to immediately report any incidents involving violence, weapons or threats. Community members are encouraged not to become involved in ongoing disputes and to prioritise the safety of their families.
Senior Sergeant Byron May, Officer in Charge Wadeye Police Station, said:
"Community Elders continue to condemn this behaviour and are working hard to support mediation efforts and community-led solutions. Police are now investigating two separate crossbow-related incidents resulting in injury within a 24-hour period, representing a significant escalation in violence. There is a real risk of serious injury or loss of life if this behaviour continues.
“Despite the scale and nature of these incidents, there has been no significant impact on service delivery within the community, and the Northern Territory Police Force, together with government and non-government partners, remains committed to maintaining essential services and business continuity in Wadeye."
