The Northern Territory Police Force has arrested and charged a 45-year-old man after he was allegedly detected driving while almost six times over the legal alcohol limit in Alice Springs yesterday morning.

At 11am, members from the Southern Cultural Reform Unit observed the man allegedly leaving a licensed premises on Gap Road and driving while intoxicated.

A coordinated response involving Cultural Reform and Territory Road Policing resulted in the driver being located on Wills Terrace a short time later.

The offender was identified and subsequently arrested after returning a breath analysis result of 0.294, almost six times the legal limit.

He has since been charged with High Range Drink Driving and Drive Unlicensed and is expected to appear in the Alice Springs Local Court at a later date.

Acting Sergeant Samuel Harris said the incident highlights the continued efforts of the Northern Territory Police Force in targeting dangerous driving behaviour and removing high-risk drivers from Territory roads.

“Driving at nearly six times over the legal limit is an extreme risk to all road users. This arrest highlights our ongoing commitment to making Territory roads safer for everyone,” Acting Sergeant Harris said.

“There is no excuse for getting behind the wheel at this level of intoxication. We urge all motorists to plan ahead and make responsible choices before driving.”
