Death Investigation - Acacia

The Northern Territory Police Force is investigating after a death in Acacia occurred earlier today during a police operation.

Around midday, Strike Force Trident officers intercepted a stolen motor vehicle traveling from Adelaide River.

The 43-year-old offender abandoned the vehicle on the corner of the Stuart Highway and Colton Road before stealing a second vehicle from a location on Colton Road.

The offender subsequently abandoned the vehicle in the Acacia Quarry before fleeing on foot.

Officers located the man, who made several self-harm attempts with a knife.

An officer deployed a taser in an attempt to prevent the man from further harming himself.

Officers provided immediate first aid and St John Ambulance arrived at the scene soon after, but the man succumbed to his injuries and was declared deceased at the scene.

A crime scene was established, and the incident is being treated as a death in custody.

At this stage, its believed the man has died of a self-inflicted wound to his neck.

Investigations are currently being led by the Major Crime Unit with oversight from the Professional Standard Command.
