UPDATE#3: Disturbance – Wadeye

Police

The Northern Territory Police Force continue to respond to ongoing unrest in the Wadeye community.

From approximately 10:30am on Monday 9 February, police attended a series of large disturbances involving multiple groups engaged in violent altercations. Individuals were allegedly armed with a range of weapons, including crossbows, compound bows and other improvised items.

During the incidents, six vehicles were set alight, and damage was caused to a window at the Wadeye Clinic. The disturbance later moved through nearby school grounds, where a building window was also damaged, before continuing onto the street outside the clinic. During the response, one police officer was struck by a rock.

At this stage, no serious injuries have been reported to police.

Additional police resources have been deployed to the community, including officers from the Katherine Criminal Investigation Branch, the Territory Response Group and Strike Force Trident, to manage the ongoing disturbances.

As a result of these deployments, there has been no further violence in the past 24 hours, with a small disturbance outside the community store dealt with swiftly.

Police will continue to maintain a high presence, with a focus on identifying and arresting those involved in recent incidents.

Acting Commander Terry Zhang said, “Community members can expect to see an increased police presence and capability.

"Those who decide to conduct themselves in this violent manner will be held to account.

“Police urge anyone who has witnessed offences, or who has video footage or other information relating to these incidents, to come forward and assist police with their investigations.”
