Our history

Since 1975, the Northern Territory Emergency Service (NTES) has grown to include 18 volunteer units with 13 support caches across the Territory, with volunteers playing a crucial role in responding to a range of emergency events.

Here’s a look at our rich history over the past 50 years and the people who make NTES what it is today.

In the beginning

In the beginning

While NTES marks its official establishment date in 1975, the foundations of the service span back more than 70 years in the Northern Territory.

Along with its sister services throughout Australia, NTES was born out of the need to create a civil defence capability during the Second World War.

With the creation of the Commonwealth Natural Disasters Organisation (NDO) in June 1974, the responsibility for civil defence and emergency service was devolved to the states and territories. Prior to this, civil defence was primarily a federal responsibility, focusing on wartime threats.

Following self-government for the Northern Territory in 1978, NT Emergency Service continued to serve the Territory, and a southern divisional headquarters at Alice Springs was opened in February 1979.

And now…..

And now…..

Today, NTES remains a critical part of the Territory’s emergency management framework, continuing to support communities across the region with a dedicated and skilled volunteer workforce adapting to the evolving needs of the community and continuing to provide essential services during times of crisis.

NTES has expanded its capabilities, integrating advanced technologies and specialised units for search and rescue operations, particularly in remote areas. It has also strengthened its public education efforts on disaster preparedness and improved its on-the-ground response during emergencies. Additionally, NTES continues to focus on building its volunteer base and developing specialised training in rescue operations, first aid, and disaster response.

Marking 50 years of service, NTES staff and volunteers are commended for their integral role in responding to a range of emergencies, including cyclones, floods, and storms.

Partnerships with our local, interstate and international counterparts have grown, with NTES teams regularly deployed to assist in times of crisis.

In 2024, the NT Fire and Emergency Services (NTFES) were formally established, marking a departure from the former NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services.  NTFES is comprised of NTES, NT Fire and Rescue Service, and Bushfires NT. The establishment of NTFES marks a new chapter for emergency services in the Territory, allowing these operational arms the ability to focus on their specialty areas while also seizing opportunities to collaborate.

As we celebrate NTES’ 50th Anniversary, it’s time to honour its history, incredible achievements, and the commitment to keeping NT communities safe.
