Fatal Crash - Central Australia

Northern Territory Police are investigating a single vehicle fatal crash that occurred near Owen Springs this morning.

Around 7:15am, police received reports that a crash had occurred on Larapinta Drive, approximately 47km west of Alice Springs.

Police and St John Ambulance paramedics attended the scene and confirmed the male driver was deceased.

Detective Acting Superintendent Brendan Lindner said, “Major Crash and Criminal Investigation Branch detectives from Alice Springs are on scene recovering the deceased and investigating the circumstances of the crash.

“Initial investigations indicate the 22-year-old driver was not wearing a seatbelt when the vehicle left the road, rolled over and crashed.

“The driver was ejected in the crash and suffered catastrophic injuries.”

Larrapinta Drive, west of the turn-off to Owen Springs, remains fully closed while Major Crash detectives record evidence to determine how and why the crash occurred.

Motorists travelling on Larrapinta Highway are urged to avoid the area and delay travel as the road is expected to remain closed until early evening today.

Family of the deceased have been notified and police urge anyone familiar with the movements of the driver prior to the crash to make contact on 131 444 and quote reference P24167664.
