Community Unrest – Groote Eylandt

Police

Northern Territory Police have responded to a series of large disturbances in the remote community of Angurugu this week.

Since 31 July 2023, local police have responded to reports of fighting within the community, between family groups, of up to 150 people using spears, crossbows and machetes.

Three males have been conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital after suffering lacerations from edged weapons. All are in a stable condition.

Alyangula Police and local Peace Makers have been working tirelessly within the region to mediate calm and additional resourcing has been deployed to support these local efforts.

Commander Kylie Anderson said, “Fighting within the community has since calmed, and a joint investigation with Major Crime will be undertaken regarding the serious injuries that resulted from the fighting.

“Meetings with Traditional Owners, Elders and family groups are occurring to reinforce to all that violence towards others is simply not acceptable and to bring an end to the current issues.

“The safety of the community and our members will always be our priority.”
