Northern Territory Police responded to a crash on the Stuart Highway overnight in which a pedestrian died.
Just before 9pm, a B-double prime mover, travelling north, struck a man who was positioned on the road in the north-bound lane. The man suffered catastrophic injuries and died at the scene.
The driver stopped and reported the incident and is assisting police with enquiries. The Stuart Highway remained closed overnight but has since reopened.
Major Crash Detectives travelled to the scene and worked through the night to process the crime scene and recover the deceased.
Police are appealing for witnesses who travelled along the Stuart Highway, in both directions, through Mataranka between 7pm and 9pm.
Detective Senior Sergeant Brendan Lindner said, “We are seeking information in relation to a grey Ford Escape station wagon which we believe had been driven by the deceased prior to the crash. It was parked on the side of the road and in close proximity to the crash. We seek to establish the movements of the man and his vehicle throughout the day prior to the crash.”
