Northern Territory Police have applauded the behavior of Territorians following the ease of COVID-19 restrictions going into the long weekend.

A total of 115 compliance checks were conducted by police across the Territory, along with an increase in high visibility police patrols and community engagements within national parks and public spaces.

Top Enders flocked to Howard Springs Nature Park, Litchfield National Park and Gunn Point, which has been a popular destination for campers.

“We’re happy to say those attending these areas have been well behaved and following physical distancing,” said Incident Controller Acting Commander Shaun Gill

Police issued 67 traffic infringement notices, 65 of which were for speeding and two for driving unregistered within a 24 hour period.

A 28-year-old Learner Driver will appear before the Darwin Local Court on one count of Driving Medium Range after he returned a BrAC of 0.086 while driving along the Casuarina Costal Reserve yesterday.

“As well as ensuring the welfare of the public on the NTs Roadmap to a New Normal, the safety of Territorians on our roads continues to be a priority,” said A/Cmdr Gill

“The restrictions may have eased, but now more than ever you must maintain physical distancing and the actions which have so far prevented the spread of COVID19 across the NT.”

“It’s been the diligent and hard work of Territorians that has given us the opportunity to enjoy this weekend, now is not the time to become complacent.”

Northern Territory Police, Australian Federal Police and Australian Defence members will continue to man biosecurity checkpoints and conduct compliance checks in national parks and public spaces.
