Police officer assaulted – Katherine

Police

Northern Territory Police have arrested a 24-year-old man for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

At around 8:30pm last night, police responded to a report of a man stealing alcohol from a Katherine residence. On the way to the location, police observed a man matching the description of the alleged offender and went to place him under arrest.

The man physically resisted police as they were attempting to handcuff him. Once handcuffed, and while being searched by police, the man allegedly assaulted one of the officers’, kicking his legs and striking his head. The man was conveyed to Katherine Watch House. The police officer suffered minor injuries.

Superintendent Daniel Shean said, “No one deserves to go to work to be assaulted. Assaults on police will not be tolerated. Those that assault police will be held to account for their actions.”

The man has been charged with:

  • assault a member of the police force
  • resist police in execution of duty
  • stealing
  • trespass

He was scheduled to appear in Katherine Local Court today.
