Police believe there are further cuts to the Stuart Highway towards Renner Springs while localised flooding in the town has closed Peko Road and Staunton Street.

Motorists travelling south of Tennant Creek should exercise extreme caution in the area known as Gilbert Creek due to approximately 300ml of water covering the road.

Local residents are urged to remain at home and refrain from any unnecessary travel as more rain is expected this afternoon. Police expect the water to drop quickly once the rain stops.

Failure to pay attention to road closures and warnings can place motorists and their rescuers at grave risk.
