Four Northern Territory Police forensic experts will be departing for Victoria today following an official request for assistance.

Northern Territory Police Commissioner and CEO of Fire and Emergency Services, Paul White said the request came late yesterday and arrangements are being finalised this morning.

"Northern Territory Police is recognised for expert skills in disaster recovery following a number of tragic incidents including the Bali Bombings.

"The official request has now been received and arrangements are underway to send two forensic experts from Darwin and two from Alice Springs to assist Victorian Police.

"We have been on standby and a number of personnel remain on standby, committed to assisting in any way we can. In circumstances like this, it's frustrating to feel like you can't do more to help.

"I will be speaking with the Victorian Police Commissioner, Ms Nixon today and remain committed to sending additional resources and expertise as required. At times like these, the Nation comes together and does all it can to assist." Commissioner and CEO Mr White said.

NT Fire and Rescue (NTFRS) and NT Emergency Services have been engaging in regular National telephone conferences with the Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council to clarify resource requirements.

NTFRS have a designated liaison officer on standby to fly to Melbourne. An additional two members are also on standby to establish the NT contingent.

At this stage, resources are being sourced from closer proximity with no requirements for NT assistance in this area of expertise.

"On behalf of Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services, I extend my deepest felt condolences to all those effected by this tragedy." Commissioner and CEO Mr White said.
