Armed man shot by police –Alice Springs

Police

A man is under guard at the Alice Springs Hospital after being wounded in an incident in Bloomfield Street last night.

Police were called to a residence in Bloomfield Street around 9.30pm last night after reports of a disturbance. When police arrived they found a smashed window at the rear of the premises and saw an armed man inside the house.

Three police officers entered the premises and began a search of the residence. They found the man armed with a knife in the laundry of the house. Police called on him to drop the weapon and when he failed to do so, one of the Police officers deployed a Taser, which appears to have failed to connect with the man.

The armed offender then continued to confront police and another officer discharged his weapon a number of times resulting in the offender being struck in the arm and chest. The 33-year-old man was taken into custody and brought to the Alice Springs Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition under police guard.

Police said the occupants of the residence, who were out at the time, returned home minutes after the shooting had taken place.

An investigation is currently underway by members of the Alice Springs Regional Investigations Division with assistance from members of the Major Crime Unit. Members of the Ethical and Professional Standards Command will oversight the investigation.
