Operation Atlas targets drink drivers

Police

Police from the Greater Darwin Area conducted a large scale traffic campaign last night targeting drink driving and traffic offences in the Palmerston region.

Police conducted 580 Random Breath tests resulting in two arrests for drive high range blood alcohol content, four were summonsed for driving medium range and four received infringement notices for drive low range.

Members also summonsed four people and issued a further eight infringement notices for traffic related offences including driving unregistered, uninsured and unlicensed.

Darwin Watch Commander Virginia Read said that although the number of drink drivers located during the operation was relatively low, it's still concerning that people take lives into their own hands.

"It is impressive to have located only 10 drink drivers out of the 580 tested however that is still 10 too many. By choosing to drink and then drive they are placing themselves and other road users at serious risk of injury or death.

"Police were however concerned at the number of unregistered and uninsured vehicles that were dealt with over night.

"NT Police will continue to conduct these unannounced large scale traffic campaigns to target persons who fail to take responsibility on our roads" she said.
