Arrest for possession of ammunition -Alice Springs

A 34-year-old man will face court after he was found in possession of a large quantity of ammunition in Alice Springs overnight.

Just after 5pm last night Police apprehended the driver of a Holden Captiva on Lovegrove Drive as a result of a traffic breach. Whilst speaking to the driver police noticed a box on the rear floor of the vehicle containing a large quantity of ammunition. A further search resulted in police finding three magazines for a .308 calibre SLR rifle and a metal box containing more ammunition in the boot of the vehicle.

Altogether police located 476 rounds of .308 calibre ammunition for SLR firearms, 50 rounds of .38 special, 50 rounds of .45 ACP, 50 rounds of 9mm Luger, 20 rounds of 5.56mm, 100 rounds of .22 and a quantity of shotgun reloading powder.

The man was arrested and later charged with possessing ammunition without a licence. He has been bailed to appear in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court on April 30.
