A man has been charged with arson following a house fire in Tennant Creek at the weekend.

Police and fire crews received a report of a house fire in Schmidt Street around 4am on Sunday. An ambulance officer who was coming home from a call-out told police he noticed flames and smoke coming from a residence in Schmidt Street The man tried unsuccessfully to rouse any occupants of the house and then used a garden hose to douse the flames coming from the north side of the residence.

When police arrived they managed to wake a 46-year-old woman in the house who was the only occupant. An investigation into the fire showed the blaze to be suspicious and a 30-year-old man was arrested later in the morning. He has been bailed to appear in the Tennant Creek Magistrates Court on May 19.
