Easter Road Safety Campaign 2009

Police

Police throughout the Northern Territory conducted a road safety campaign over the Easter long weekend, locating numerous offenders in the process.

Members breath tested 5 804 drivers between 6:00 am Thursday morning and midnight on Monday.

Of those tested 44 drivers returned positive readings and 305 drivers were issued with traffic infringement notices.

A further 60 arrests were made and 94 will be summonsed for traffic related offences.

Superintendent of Road Safety Bob Rennie said police were kept extremely busy over the five day campaign.

"Police were out in force on the roads over the long weekend conducting RBT's and apprehending those drivers who chose to break the law, even after all the road safety messages.

"It was quite alarming to locate so many drivers under the influence, however after removing them from our roads that is 44 less people likely to kill someone.

"Overall police were kept very busy and will continue targeting Territory drivers throughout the rest of the year in a bid to keep the trauma on our roads to an absolute minimum" he said.
