Police are investigating an incident near Alice Springs where explosives were used to blow up a water tank.

Police received a report on Sunday night that a large concrete water tank at the Tropic of Capricorn had been extensively damaged.

The water tank, which weighs an estimated two tonne, appeared to have been blown up using a form of explosives.

This resulted in the water tank being dislodged clear from the supporting concrete base and debris was found approximately 35 meters away.

Damage and replacement costs of the water tank have been estimated at approximately $10,000.

Members of the Major Crime Unit attended the area today.
Acting Commander Kym Davies said the improper use of explosives is considered extremely serious.

"This sort of vandalism using explosives is considered highly risky and it is concerning that someone would utilise such explosives in a public area," said Commander Davies

"We're appealing to members of the public who passed the area during the Tuesday to Friday timeframe to assist us in finding as to when the damage occurred.

"We're also asking anyone who saw or heard the explosion to assist police with any available information."
