Police

Alice Springs Police arrested a 50 year-old man yesterday after finding drugs in his possession.

Members from the Dog Operations Unit and Drug Intelligence Unit attended the transit centre on Gap Road and conducted random searches of passengers and luggage on a Grey Hound bus from Adelaide.

A Drug Detector Dog reacted positively to a male passenger and police subsequently located 1805grms of cannabis in his possession.

He was arrested and charged with possession and supplying a commercial quantity of cannabis.

He has been remanded in custody to appear in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court today.

The estimated street value of the drugs is approximately $45,000.

Detective Sergeant Michael Sharkey of the Drug Intelligence Unit said the result showed how effective the drug dogs were when it came to detecting illicit drugs.

"I hope this sends a clear message to anyone planning to bring illegal drugs into Alice Springs as we will continue to conduct these sorts of random searches on a regular basis."
