At about 4:30 am yesterday, police received a report of an assault on a taxi driver outside a Darwin Nightclub.

It is alleged the 25-year-old taxi driver was assaulted by an intoxicated 30-year-old man after a brief argument ensued inside the taxi he was driving. The offender then exited the taxi and continued to punch the man through an open window.

Security staff from the Mitchell Street nightclub responded quickly and restrained the man as he attempted to flee the scene. The man remained extremely aggressive and was restrained until police arrived a short time later.

The victim received minor injuries and was treated a Royal Darwin Hospital.

Police arrested the Anula man and charged him with aggravated assault and disorderly behaviour in a public place.

He was bailed to appear on 26 May 2009 in Darwin Magistrate's Court.
