Assault arrest - Palmerston

A man has been arrested after allegedly assaulting a 74-year-old man at Palmerston at the weekend.

Police were called just after 5pm on Saturday after the victim was bashed near the Palmerston Bus Exchange as he was waiting for a bus home. The man told police he was approached by a man who grabbed him by the shirtfront. The victim ran off towards the Coles carpark but the offender followed him and punched him in the face.

The offender then began going through the man's pockets but fled when the victim managed to alert a passerby. Police, with the aid of Transport Safety Officers, viewed CCTV footage and were able to identify the alleged offender who was arrested a short time later.

The 25-year-old man was remanded in custody to appear in the Darwin Magistrates Court today charged with:

Aggravated assault
Attempted robbery
Assault with intent to steal.
