A man is in custody and a woman is in hospital following a domestic dispute in Tennant Creek last night.

Police received reports just before 11 o'clock last night after a 31-year-old woman had been assaulted attended the Tennant Creek Hospital.

The woman told police that her partner assaulted her by punching her to the face several times during an argument at a town camp.

It appears the two had been drinking together earlier in the evening when the man became agitated and assaulted the woman. Fearing further violence the woman returned to her home and went to bed.

The woman told police she was later woken by the offender and a further argument ensued and the man again assaulted her.

The woman was taken to Tennant Creek Hospital and later medivaced to Alice Springs Hospital with suspected spinal and head injuries.

Police arrested a 35-year-old man a short time later and have charged him with breaching a domestic violence order and aggravated assault.

The man has been remanded in custody to appear at Alice Springs Magistrates Court tomorrow.
