Teens arrested for assault – Palmerston - 4291671

Police

Three teenagers have been charged in relation to an assault in Palmerston earlier this month.

Members of the Commanders Tactical Team and the Youth Crime Unit arrested two boys aged 13 and one aged 15 yesterday following an assault on a 35-year-old man at Palmerston on May 3. The victim told police that around 10pm he was approached by a large group of youths at the Palmerston Skate who are alleged to have assaulted and robbed him after asking him for cigarettes.

The youths have been charged with aggravated robbery, assault with intent to steal and aggravated assault.

Both 13-year-olds have been remanded in custody to appear in the Darwin Youth Justice Court today while the 15-year-old has been bailed to appear on May 19.

Commander Rob Kendrick said police investigations identified the suspects early on and police have been compiling the case against them in order to bring them before the courts.

" We would like to thank the media and those witnesses who have come forward for their help, however we are still seeking a number of witnesses," Commander Kendrick said.

"After drinking all day in the Palmerston Tavern the victim went to the vicinity of the skate park at about 10pm on May 3. He was drinking with some people previously unknown to him and we are seeking these people to come forward to assist with our enquiries. Anyone with information should phone police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000."

Commander Kendrick said whilst the public had a right to expect to be able to walk home safely they should not place themselves in situations which make them vulnerable to becoming victims of crime.

"This is not a message just for Palmerston but anywhere."

Commander Kendrick said investigations were continuing and more arrests were expected.

Yesterday's arrests came as police continue conducting special operations in Palmerston targeting youth crime. The operations have resulted in numerous arrests including that of a 25-year-old man allegedly responsible for an assault on a 74-year-old man in Palmerston earlier in the month.

"This is also a timely reminder for parents to double check their children's whereabouts and check who they're with. If they are not at home, know where they are and what they are doing and check," Commander Kendrick said.
