Attempted Sexual Assault Katherine

Police

Katherine Police have arrested a 23-year-old male this morning following the attempted sexual assault of a 21-year-old female that occurred yesterday at about 5.50pm.

The arrest was made shortly after an appeal to the public for assistance this morning via the media. The detailed description of the offender was announced as a member of the public noticed him walking along the Stuart Highway and notified Police.

The 23-year-old man from Ngukurr was arrested, and is currently being held in custody pending interview.

The woman was walking on a bicycle path south of Katherine along the Stuart Highway when the incident happened.

The woman was listening to music through her headphones when she was grabbed from behind and dragged into near by bush land. It is believed the victim was pinned to the ground before fighting the offender off. The woman then flagged down a passing off duty police woman, who assisted her.

A taxi carrying Senator Nigel Scullion also stopped, with Senator Scullion chasing the alleged offender for some time before losing him in dense scrub. Senator Moore of Queensland and Senator Adams of Western Australia also stopped to render assistance.

Jeanette Kerr, Commander of the Katherine and Regional Command said there are a number of things that arise from this incident that should be commended.

"This was a quick response provided by one of our off duty police members, coupled with the actions of Senator Scullion in an attempt to apprehend the offender.

"The media played a vital role in calling for assistance from the public and providing the description of the offender, leading to his apprehension only 10 minutes after the broadcast.

"And finally, the member of the public who heard the broadcast, quickly alerted police to the offenders whereabouts."

However, Commander Kerr went on to stress that although we have the right to safety, everyone should consider their personal safety when out at any time.

"Always be aware of your surroundings especially if you're listening to music. Use only one headphone or set a volume so you can still hear what is happening around you. Consider exercising with a friend or a group, and carry your mobile phone with you." Commander Kerr concluded.
