Palmerston will be the next area to trial the Integrated Service Delivery Model aimed at bringing social services to the community.

The idea for the model was an initiative of the Inter-agency Tasking and Coordination Group (ITCG)- a multi-agency group which meets on a fortnightly basis to discuss community welfare, social and law and order issues in the community.

The ITCG is chaired by Police Commander Rob Kendrick.

"This will be the third time we have trialled the model, the first being at Nightcliff in March, then one in Fannie Bay," Commander Kendrick said.

"The idea behind it is to bring a range of services to the community, rather than having to wait for them to come to us. For instance, we have representatives from Centrelink, Territory Housing, Department of Health and Families, the Youth crime Unit, Department of Justice, First Response Patrol, School-based Police and the Palmerston City Council.

"In Palmerston, deployment teams will walk the local CBD particularly looking for kids who should be in school or itinerants who may be in need of support services.

"They then offer the appropriate services and follow-up to assist with whatever the problem may be.

"The whole initiative is hoped to be a simple but very effective tool in containing potential anti-social behaviour such as reconnecting kids with the education system or ensuring the safety of the homeless."

Commander Kendrick said the Mobile Police van, which is currently parked in the Palmerston CBD as part of a separate Operation, would act as the group's headquarters for tomorrow's event.

The service delivery program will operate in Palmerston between 1pm and 3pm today, Thursday, June 4.
