Drivers Warned for Finke – Alice Springs

Police

Drivers going to watch the Finke Desert Race are warned police will be out in force during the long weekend.

Alice Springs Sergeant Conan Robertson said police would be on patrol both at the race and on the Stuart Highway.

"Every year we conduct a special operation for the Finke Desert Race to ensure that competitors are the only ones using the track, Sergeant Robertson said

"Drivers can expect road checks for speeding drivers, unregistered vehicles, motorbikes and trailers and RBTs to ensure people aren't drinking and driving.

"Our advice remains the same each year. If you're heading out to the race and intend to drink, don't drive. Either stay out overnight or have a designated driver."

"Police will also be targeting unregistered motorbikes and vehicles and advise spectators not to go on the track at all during the race."

Sergeant Robertson said police would be patrolling campsites along the track to ensure everyone has a good time in a safe environment.

"The Finke Desert Race is one of the major highlights in Central Australia and always attracts large crowds, which are often well-behaved. However people can expect to see a police presence during the three-day event to ensure everyone has a great time."
