A 44-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder following the suspicious death of a woman in Alice Springs overnight.

Alice Springs Police received a report that a body had been found in the Todd River just after 11o'clock last night.

Police conducted a search of the river and found the body of a 41-year-old woman in the middle of the Todd River near the Undoolya Road causeway.

The woman appeared to have extensive injuries to her body.

The man presented himself to the police station early this morning and was taken into custody. He has since been questioned by detectives and has been charged with one count of murder.

He has been refused bail and is set to appear in the Alice Springs Magistrates Court tomorrow.
