At about 11:00pm last night police were flagged down to a fatal accident on the Central Arnhem Highway, 10 kilometres from the Stuart Highway.
It appears the driver lost control of the Commodore sedan and collided with a tree.
Maranboy and Katherine Police along with Barunga Community Clinic staff attended the location.
A crime scene was established immediately and maintained overnight for further investigation today.
Initial investigations indicate alcohol was a likely contributing factor in the crash.
The only occupant of the vehicle, a 25-year-old man, died as a result of the crash.
This brings the road toll to 14 compared to 33 at the same time last year.
Divisional Officer A/Superintendent Steve Heyworth urges the public to "take care when driving on our roads, don't speed, don't drink and drive, ensure seat belts are worn and avoid fatigue. This is particularly important in remote and rural areas, where the tyranny of distance can delay emergency responses".
