Fatal Vehicle Crash - Mataranka - update#1

At approximately 5:45pm yesterday Police received a report of a single vehicle crash 50kms south of Mataranka on the Stuart Highway. Mataranka Emergency Services and clinic staff and Katherine Saint John Ambulance and Fire Service attended the scene.

Police believe the Hiace panel van was travelling south bound when it left the highway. The car travelled approximately 120m into bushland before hitting a tree on the front passenger side leaving the passenger trapped inside the vehicle.

A 73-year-old man died as a result of the crash while receiving medical treatment and the 72-year-old female driver was conveyed by Saint John Ambulance to Katherine Hospital for treatment.

Crash Scene Investigators are attending the scene today to determine the exact cause of the crash.
