NT Police Commissioner and CEO Announces Retirement

The Commissioner of Police and CEO Fire & Emergency Services, Mr Paul White has today announced his retirement following almost 8 years in the role.

Mr. White has praised all the Tri-service personnel and volunteers alike for their outstanding service to the community. He also acknowledged the high regard in which the Police, Fire & Emergency Services is held by Government and the community.

"Members of the Tri-Service have always worked hard to serve and protect the Territory community and enjoy an enviable reputation for getting the job done often in difficult and challenging circumstances".

Mr White also cited his last 8 years as the Commissioner and CEO as the highlight of his career,

"I am proud and grateful to have had the opportunity to serve as the Commissioner and CEO and would like to thank all of those I have worked with for their commitment and support during my time at the helm.

"Over the past 8 years, I have overseen huge growth in the police force and a continuous program of improvement in services to the community.

"I am confident the Tri-service is well placed to meet future demands and I'd like to place on record my appreciation to the Government for their ongoing support.

"Since the day I started, we have as an organisation, responded to several budget initiatives including the O'Sullivan Assessment of Resources, a consultant's review of the Fire & Rescue Service, the report of the Road Safety Task Force, Closing the Gap, the policing response to the Australian Government's NT Emergency Response, Safer Streets and Police Beats, just to name a few.

"The Tri-Service's budget has increased from $130 million in 2001-02 to $280 million in 2009-10 and police and civilian numbers have increased by one third.

"Together, these initiatives have contributed to a modernisation and improved professionalism of the organisation". Mr White concluded.

A veteran of 41 years in policing, Mr. White joined South Australia Police as a cadet in April 1968, and attained the rank of Assistant Commissioner prior to commencing his appointment in the Northern Territory on 17 December 2001.

Mr White will officially retire on Friday 16 October 2009 and has accepted a position in South Australia as the Liquor & Gambling Commissioner. This new role will oversee compliance, regulation, enforcement and education within the South Australian liquor, racing and gaming industries.
