Alice Springs Police are appealing for witnesses in relation to the death of a woman that occurred near Heavitree Gap overnight.

Police received a report at 9.55pm from a motorist who found the woman lying on the south bound lane of the Stuart Highway.

It appears the woman had been struck by a vehicle, which has then left the scene.

Traffic was diverted from the South Stuart Highway from 10pm while crash investigators and members from the Regional Investigations Division established a crime scene.

Police investigations into the exact circumstances are on-going.

Acting Superintendent David Chalker said he urged anyone with information of the death to come forward.

"Anyone who was in the area at the time and has information that could assist us with this investigation is urged to call 131 444, "said A/Superintendent Chalker

The death brings to road toll to 20 compared to 53 for the same time last year.
