Alice Springs Police have closed both lanes of the Stuart Highway south of the Gap following an oil spill on Commonage Road and Stuart Highway.

It appears a 44 gallon drum of oil fell off the back of a truck and ruptured, spilling oil across both lanes.

Fire and Rescue Services are at the scene to clean up the spill.

Police ask drivers to exercise caution when approaching the area and obey the direction of police.

The road will remain closed until further notice.
