Assault – Nhulunbuy

Police

Police have arrested and charged a 21-year-old male in relation to an assault that occurred in Nhulunbuy the night of Wednesday 23 September.

It is alleged that the male was intoxicated and subsequently evicted from The Walkabout Tavern at approximately 8:15 pm.

He returned a short time later with a knife and proceeded to threaten security guards.

It is believed that he then left the location, crossing Westal Street before having a minor altercation with Nhulunbuy Night Patrol staff members.

Whilst on the road Police allege that he walked in front of a Toyota Yaris, causing it to stop and then damaged the bonnet of the vehicle by kicking it. The offender then walked around to the driver's side of the vehicle and used the knife to cut the driver's face through the open window.

The 59-year-old male victim later attended the Gove District Hospital where he received treatment for a laceration to his right cheek.

The offender fled the scene and when later located at a residence in Wallaby Beach he was arrested, however prior to being conveyed to Nhulunbuy Police Station, spat in the face of two attending members.

He was charged with:

Aggravated assault (x5)
Make a threat to kill a person (x2)
Go armed in public
Assault police (x3)
Unlawfully damage property

He was remanded in custody to appear in the Darwin Magistrate's Court Monday 28 September.
