Police are calling for witnesses in relation to a sexual assault that occurred in Darwin early this morning.

It is alleged that at approximately 2:50 am a 19-year-old female German tourist left Discovery Nightclub and went for a drive with an unknown male to the Mindil Beach Markets area.

The male then drove to Parap and sexually assaulted the victim.

The offender drove the victim to the Casino and fled the scene, where she was assisted by two French tourists in a white van who drove her back to Discovery Nightclub.

At approximately 3:00 am, a 26 year-old male driving a Holden Commodore sedan was pulled over in Stuart Park for the purpose of a random breath test, returning a reading of 0.091 percent.

It was soon established that this male was allegedly involved in the sexual assault and he was arrested and conveyed to the Darwin Watch House.

He remains in police custody and is expected to be charged later today.

Police urge the couple in the white van that assisted the victim to contact them on 131 444 to assist with further investigations.
