Director of Northern Territory Emergency Services, Peter Davies would like to congratulate this years Territory winner of the Safer Community Award.

'The Sundowner Project' won this year's award at a presentation this morning at Parliament House by the Chief Minister, the Honourable Paul Henderson.

Mr Davies said the project is an interactive story telling tool to support training through seeing, hearing and doing,

"It's innovative and unique approach to support the training of our Night Patrol workers in terms of safety not only for themselves, but for their clients as well.

"The tool itself includes experiences Night Patrol workers providing practical approaches and solutions to commonly shared issues throughout the NT.

"The tool has excellent use of imagery, symbols and audio to remain effective for audiences who speak different languages and the DVD or online format provides an efficient and effective solution to the challenges of training across often, very remote areas.

"I would finally like to take this opportunity to wish this project all the best in the National Awards set to be announced in Canberra on 3 December - it would be great to see a local project take out the National award for the second year in a row." Mr Davies said.

The application for 'The Sundowner Project' was submitted by The Human Services Training Advisory Council Inc, as the lead organisation in partnership with the Council for Aboriginal Alcohol Program Services Inc. (CAAPS). This submission represented the categories of education, training and research.

A second, highly commended project at this morning's award ceremony was the Australian Red Cross 'Transportation of vulnerable people before a cyclone' program which provides transport and personal support services for vulnerable people en route to emergency shelter.

The Safer Communities Awards are sponsored by the Attorney General's Department in conjunction with the Northern Territory Government and the Northern Territory Emergency Services.

They recognise best practice and innovation by organisations and individuals that have developed and successfully implemented an initiative which helps to build safer communities across Australia.
