Police are investigating the death of a woman that was discovered last night on the Esplanade in Darwin City.

Members were alerted at approximately 6:15 pm after a member of the public had located a deceased woman at the base of the cliffs opposite the Novotel Hotel Darwin.

Police, NT Fire and Rescue, NT Emergency Service and St John attended the scene and recovered the deceased.

The woman, who is yet to be identified, is described to be of aboriginal appearance and approximately 25 - 35 years of age.

Investigations to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the death will continue and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
