Police

NT Police can confirm, Sergeant Brett Meredith sadly passed away shortly after 5pm this afternoon at Royal Darwin Hospital.

Despite all efforts by hospital staff, the surgery was unsuccessful resulting in Sergeant Meredith's life support being withdrawn.

Commander Jeanette Kerr of the Katherine and Northern Region Police said this is a difficult and emotional time while everyone tries to make sense of what has occurred.

"First and fore most, my thoughts and condolences and those of Katherine police staff and the wider NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services community are with Brett's wife and family.

"Providing support for Brett's wife and family, friends and colleagues while they struggle through this time of immense loss and deep sadness is our primary focus.

"Officers from Darwin have also arrived in Katherine to provide operational support and to provide some respite for local officers and to give them the opportunity to support each other and to grieve." Commander Kerr said.

The officers in Katherine are receiving welfare support.

Sergeant Meredith has served with NT Police for two years since joining as a Transitional Entry Graduate from NSW Police in January 2008.

Brett graduated as a Senior Constable and was posted to Palmerston Police Station before being promoted to Sergeant in January 2009. As a Sergeant, he was posted to Katherine Police Station as a Supervisor in General Duties. Sgt Meredith was still serving in Katherine when assaulted, resulting in his death.

Commander Kerr continued, "Sergeant Meredith had an immediate impact on Katherine Station, he was a very experienced and knowledgeable police officer and an outstanding supervisor. Brett had a vital role in guiding and mentoring new officers at the station, he will be deeply missed".

Two men remain in Police custody in relation to the death of Sergeant Meredith and the assault of a second Police Officer, Constable Kevin Carr who sustained minor injuries. The men have been transferred to custody in Darwin while Major Crime and Katherine Detectives continue to investigate.

No charges have been laid to date.

Sergeant Meredith leaves behind his wife, also a serving police officer, and three young children.

Commander Kerr concluded, "The death of Brett is not only a tragic loss to family, friends and colleagues but the loss to the wider community of an outstanding, committed Police Officer and a good man."

Police continue to call on anyone who witnessed this incident or has any information to contact them on 131 444 or attend Katherine Police Station.

Further updates with regard to funeral arrangements and the investigation will be provided as it comes available.
