Drug Detector Dogs

Police

The Dog Operation Unit and Taipan the drug detector dog have been busy recently making several drug seizures at Darwin Airport.

Police are continuously conducting screening of freight and passengers on flights destined to remote NT communities, resulting in seizure of the drugs before arriving in the communities.

A total of 1,771.71 grams of cannabis has been detected by the Dog Operations Unit this year; There are currently four drug detector dogs in Darwin, two in Katherine and two in Alice Springs.

Superintendent Steve Martin said: "Police will continue to actively target all road, air, rail and maritime corridors into remote communities with all means available to stem the supply of illegal drugs into those areas.

"The drug detector dogs are an extremely effective means to intercept the illicit substances destined for these communities," he said.

A vision opportunity of Taipan conducting a mock search and an interview opportunity with Senior Constable Richard O'Brien will be available at 2:00pm at the PMC basketball courts.
