Buffalo versus car - Jabiru

Police

Police are warning motorists to drive with care through remote areas of the Territory after a 32-year-old woman had a run in with a Buffalo last night.

The woman was driving a Toyota Prado on the Arnhem Highway 85 km's east of Jabiru at approximately 8:50 pm when a large Water Buffalo ran from a water filled culvert into the path of the vehicle.

Despite braking heavily, the woman was unable to avoid the animal.

The four wheel drive was extensively damaged and the animal had to be destroyed by attending members.

Territory Duty Superintendent Jamie Chalker said that this woman was very lucky and this should act as a warning to all motorists.

"The Territory presents numerous driving conditions that one doesn't encounter on interstate roads. Not only do we have to contend with flash flooding and thousands of kilometres of dry dusty roads and highways, but we also have to be aware that we are not the only ones that use these thoroughfares.

"Wild horses, birds, dingos, reptiles, kangaroos, pigs and buffalos can also be found on or near these roads and I urge everyone to be extra cautious of these potential hazards, especially whilst driving during dawn and dusk" he said.

Police state that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
